Folliculitis
Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. Men and women can develop folliculitis, which appears on any body part with hair. The most common areas are the face, scalp, chest, back, and legs.
Folliculitis symptoms
There are many different reasons why someone might develop folliculitis, including:
Bacterial infection: this is the most common cause of folliculitis. Bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus (staph) can get into the hair follicles and cause inflammation.
Exposure to oils or chemicals: this can include using hair products, cosmetics, sunscreens, or any other chemical that meets the skin.
Friction from clothing: tightly fitting clothes or underwear.
Folliculitis treatment
Folliculitis is not usually a serious condition, but it can become a chronic problem if not treated properly.
